Palatal Expansion
The service is generally called Palatal Expansion or Maxillary Expansion, and the device used is the Palatal Expander (often referred to as a Rapid Palatal Expander or RPE).
This orthodontic service is a foundational step, especially in children, designed to widen the upper jaw (maxilla).
How it Works
- The Appliance: The expander is a fixed device cemented to the back upper teeth, resting against the roof of the mouth. It has a central screw mechanism.
- The Goal: The upper jaw is made of two separate bones that join in the middle (the midpalatal suture). In children and younger teens, this suture is not fully fused.
- The Action: A small key is used by the patient or parent to turn the central screw daily. This turning applies gentle, continuous outward pressure, causing the two halves of the jaw to slowly separate and widen.
- The Result: Widening the jaw corrects a crossbite (where upper teeth fit inside the lower teeth) and creates more space for crowded permanent teeth to erupt properly, often reducing the need for tooth extractions later. It can also improve nasal airflow and breathing.
The appliance typically stays in place for several months, even after the desired expansion is achieved, to allow new bone to fill in and stabilize the expanded jaw.
